Abstract:Play Movement which took place around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, is a social action and response to the social problems arising from American urbanization, migration and rapid industrialization by social reformers, scholars, philanthropist and government etc. Through this movement, many playgrounds were constructed in congested city areas. Places, facilities and organized plays were provided first to children, then to people of all ages. It had a very positive meaning and also laid solid foundation for the later leisure development of American. It has contributed greatly to shape American’s leisure today. Today, nearly a century after, the play movement is still very significant to people, esp. people living in the urban areas. The background, origin and seven development stages of the American play movement have been discussed.
